Weight Management for the Working Mom

Although losing weight as a working mom may seem a daunting task to accomplish, you can still achieve your weight loss goal if you do it right.   As a working mom, you might unconsciously place yourself last on your to-do-list. But here is the truth, If you do not make good time to manage your weight, you will make a good time for illness. A weight-management mindset coach, Kylie Ryan had a session with moms, and here is what she said, "If you want healthy and happy kids as a mom, take good care of yourself." So, it doesn't matter how busy you are, as a working mom. You can still take some weight management measures to shed some pounds. Do you want to know what they are?

Just continue reading!

Here are some essential weight management tips to help you lose weight as a working mom:

1. Do not opt for a quick fix

Fad diets or weight loss pills aimed at you losing weight quickly often have ripple effects on your health.  For people who are moderately overweight, fad diets and diet pills can increase the risk of developing an eating disorder. On the other hand, for people who struggle with weight loss or have physical ailments like diabetes and heart disease, medication is recommended to help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Consider a sustainable weight-management program, in other words eat healthy and exercise and use weight loss medications as recommended by a healthcare provider.

2. Exercise

Even a few minutes of exercise each day will go a long way to help you manage your weight as a working mom. Mornings can sometimes be chaotic with clingy toddlers, crazy schedules, and tight budgets.  You should schedule a convenient time to exercise each day, call it Mommy Time.   Remember! Consistency matters; so whatever time you set for yourself make sure you stick to it.

These three tips could help make your Mommy Time special:

First: Find a private and quiet space you could probably decorate (as a visual reminder) for some morning or evening exercises.

Second: Start gradually and increase your workouts. Fifteen minutes for a start is a great idea.

Don’t forget! Until you feel comfortable exercising on your own, you would need to follow a guided practice. Having a skilled partner would be helpful.  You can also harness a myriad of workout videos on YouTube or Instagramers.

Third: Consider ensuring your entire household knows that you are serious about your weight management decisions. Prepare a workout calendar, and check off each one you complete.

3. Control Your Appetite

Eating foods with lots of sugar is tempting.  Question decisions to get a sugary snack by always ask yourself, "Do I need this food?  Am I really starving?"  This is a way of checking your appetite.

While addressing reasons for checking appetites, Dr. Rick Kausman, author of "If Not Dieting, Then What?," said "doing too much of non-hungry eating can tip our eating habits out of balance." Dr. Kausman went on to add that "thinking more about everyday foods like fruit, cereals, vegetables and occasionally chocolate and chips, could be quite beneficial."

4. Keto Diet Plan

Have you heard about the keto diet? It is a diet that encourages eating more fats and little carbohydrates. Keto diet typically involves taking just 5% of carbs, 20% of proteins, and 75% of fats.

The body primarily uses carbs as a source of fuel for several metabolic functions. When you deprive your body of carbs, it begins to break down fat molecules to produce ketones. Hence, the name keto was derived.

A dietitian and an expert in diabetes, Shahzadi Devje RD, CDE, MSc, says "an individual on a keto diet plan should eat carbs that are full of fiber." For example, add a salad to your meal while leaving out the brownies. You can also try fiber-filled fats such as avocados, nuts, and seeds or add a fiber supplement to your daily routine.

It’s best to obtain professional advice from a healthcare provider before starting a diet plan.

Some simple keto meals you can try as a working mom include:

  • Low carb quesadillas
  • Bacon and green beans
  • Cauliflower and cheese casserole
  • Omelettes
  • Mini zucchini pizzas
  • Jerk chicken
  • Ackee and saltfish

Final Remarks

You can manage your weight and stay healthy as a busy mom no matter your workload or tight schedule. You don’t have to consider plastic surgery as a quick fix to lose weight quickly. Even if you do, it shouldn't come before having a good exercise routine and a healthy diet.
